LAYER LIKE A BOSS

Well we’ve certainly waved good bye to all things summer and flowy, which means it’s now time to layer up like a boss and tackle Melbourne winter as the temperature begins to drop.

If just the thought of having to figure out how to layer up for the day ahead makes you that little more anxious and overwhelmed each morning, then this is the blog for you.

One of the biggest challenges my clients face when shopping for a new wardrobe is “how to layer?” without of course looking like the Michelin man.

We literally have no clue what to expect one hour from the next in Melbourne, and if you’re someone who is running in and out of different environments, constantly needing to layer-up and de-layer accordingly, then it’s imperative you know how to nail the “art of layering” to combat our ever-changing temperature.

I promise it isn’t actually as hard as you think. Just follow these simple rules to make life that wee bit easier!

1. Your base pieces need to look great as a stand-alone piece
This layer needs to be the most lightweight, so think tee’s or light weight long sleeve tops and shirts. You do however want to make sure you would wear this as a stand-alone piece just in case you over heat inside and need to de-layer

Style Tip: Try using a lighter colour or striped base top, then build up to darker or bolder colours as you layer outwards if you want to avoid being all too dark.

2. Make most layers light in weight, and layer from thin to thick
This is the key to nailing balance and comfort. Make this next layer that extra bit thicker than the first by adding a shirt, knit, cardigan or denim jacket. If you struggle to layer with what you currently own, you may be missing this “middle man” layer! When you’re next shopping, think about the arms and if they will fit under a jacket or coat easily.

3. Keep thick knits, coats or jackets as the very outer layer
This is where most people go wrong as they tend to only buy chunky knits and jackets in winter without thinking if they will layer with each other, (or at all). Make sure all your other layers fit under comfortably enough that you can still freely move.

Style Tip: Throw a statement coat over your shoulders like you would a cape (refer to picture) Trust me, this will instantly give you that on trend feel and take your outfit to a whole new level.

4. Add a pattern or texture for interest
You know me… Wear what makes you feel good, so stick to your personal style here. Get creative and add in those patterns, textures and colours that make you feel great.

5. Don’t forget your head, neck, feet & hands
If you’re a cold person like me, then accessorizing is vital to keeping me both warm (and happy) when it’s cold. Boss up your outfit and use scarves, hats and gloves for extra snug factor. If you’ve worked with me before, you’ll know I’m always saying “the last item on is usually the first noticed”, so never underestimate the power of detail!
